Unruhige Räume PDF Print E-mail

Unruhige Räume is an electroacoustic work by Bjørnar Habbestad and Pascal Baltazar  employing synthesis, sampling, processing and spatial projection in a live performance by three computer instrumental- ists on a 12-channel speaker system.

The german title translates into "unsettled spaces" or "unquiet rooms" - two different readings of the concept of the piece. Each section is based on the idea of a sonic experience of a metaphorical room. The conception and description of these imaginary rooms make out the foundation for the development of materials, forms and sound space.
Without limiting the work to a representational approach to space we draw inspiration from the experience of a body standing or moving inside spaces with architectural or social qualities (materials, light, shapes, activities, behaviours, technologies).
The larger form is elaborated through the juxtaposition and transition between these physical, multiple, fragmented or unreal spaces.

The work is conceived as a collaborative artistic research process with a series of 6 residencies over a period of two years. Public presentations are being made as milestones in the development process from the start of the project until the presentation of the completed work in 2011.
Both Habbestad and Baltazar are developing live software and hardware systems to support their perfor- mance practice. In this way electroacoustic instrumental design becomes an integral part of their compositional process. A novel multitouch spatialization interface has also been designed for sound engineer Benjamin Maumus, who performs the live sound spatialization of the duo’s musical material.

An article about the research process has been published at ICMC 2010 , NY.

Incises PDF Print E-mail

Commissioned by INA-GRM (2008) (~ 12')

Composition for electroacoustic instrument

The interpretation of Incises -as well as its previous composition- unfolds in a constant dialogue between gesture and listening : from cracked spaces to broken trajectories, the gesture carves matter, crackles it, traces trenches into it... A space cracks down, the next one emerges... Between theses slits a trajectory for listening gets drawn.
